Percentage of scheme assets held in property

FOI reference - FOI-51
Date - 27 October 2022

Request

Please could I request an extract from the pensions scheme register on the percentage of scheme assets that are held in property.

I would like an extract of all the data you hold on all scheme responses to the years 2019 through 2022, along with an indication of whether the scheme was a defined benefit or hybrid scheme, the scheme status (whether open to new members, closed to new members, paid up, winding up or wound up) and an indication of scheme size.

I am interested in understanding the distribution of percentage allocations to property and how this varies according to scheme type.

I am happy for the data to be anonymised to remove any question of commercial sensitivity as I am not interested in the allocations to property of any individual scheme, only how the allocation percentage varies between schemes.

Response

I can confirm that we hold information falling within scope of your request.

Information we are able to supply

Please see the attached spreadsheet holding the data you have requested.

Notes on the data

The data set used for this request is based on an extract from the pension schemes register as of 31 March 2022. The data set covers 5,378 schemes DB / hybrid schemes on the register as of 31 March 2022. Schemes that are wound up, not registrable are excluded from the analysis. The percentages invested in property are a percentage of total assets.

Where NA is listed this means there is no property data for the scheme, where a field is blank this means the scheme was recently established and therefore did not appear on that year's extract of the pension schemes register.

Statuses are split as follows:

  • open schemes, where new members can join the scheme and accrue benefits
  • schemes closed to new members (CTNM), in which existing members continue to accrue benefits
  • schemes closed to future accruals (CTFA), where existing members can no longer accrue new years of service and no new members can join
  • schemes that are in the process of winding up
